THE local entertainment fraternity is still reeling from the tragic accident that claimed the life of Ranking Trevor on Tuesday.

Ranking Trevor, whose real name is Maxwell Grant, died when the motorcycle which he was riding was hit by a vehicle along the corner of Cling Cling Avenue and Olympic Way in St Andrew. The 60-year-old died on the spot.

Among those mourning his loss is colleague and friend Wade ‘Trinity’ Brammer.

Trinity, whose career started in the mid-70s and continued throughout the 1990s, is known for songs such as Three Piece Suit, Uptown Girl and In The Ghetto.

“He was a really cool yute. His passing represents another musical soldier leaving the battlefield,” he said.

Trinity recounts the early days.

“I was from two Miles and he was from the Waterhouse community,” Trinity said.

He said Ranking Trevor and himself would used to deejay on the soundsystem King Attorney. The sound was later renamed Socialist Roots by the new owner Tony Welsh.

“He, myself and Dillinger used to go around the town on the sound deejaying,” Trinity recounted.

Trinity remembers another incident involving his late colleague.

“I was in Los Angles performing on a show. Tippa Lee told me that Ranking Trevor was saying he was the original singer for Three Piece Suit (a song which he had done a version of Three Piece Chicken and Chips). When I came home, I confronted him. He was like ‘How mi fi do that… a you a di original singer?’ We just burst out laughing,” recalled Trinity.

“He was a youth whey nuh really mek nuh trouble. I just wonder why people like those have to die,” he said.

The deejay sends his condolences to Ranking Trevor’s family and offered the encouraging words: “after every sadness, there will be gladness.”
