THE RETURN OF GOSPEL’S – THE LOVE SINGERS!

Cecelia Campbell-Livingston—–

GOSPEL group The Love Singers, who enjoyed moderate success in the 1980s, are on the comeback trail.

According to founding members Sam Wisdom and George Scott, they have regrouped since December last year.

THE LOVE SINGERS… on the comeback trail

“The seed to reform the group was planted when husband-and-wife gospel team Robert and Jenieve Bailey requested the Love Singers to perform at their 20th anniversary concert last year,” said Wisdom.

The group members say they are looking toward the future.

“We are examining the way forward. We are looking at creating some concert seasons and releasing our previous recordings as a collection, before looking at new recordings,” said Scott told Jamaica Observer.

The Love Singers comprise Marlene McIntosh, Barbara Edwards-Smith, Angela Smart, Kenya Salmon, Sam Wisdom, Leroy Smith, Michael McIntosh, and George Scott.

Formed in 1981, the group were the voices behind gospel favourites such as Lead Me, Friend In Jesus, Changed, King Jesus, and Power In The Blood.

Wisdom and Scott said that a lot has changed in the industry since they first recorded gospel.

“I find it hard to see a Christian artist wearing pants at hips and a big towel hanging from his back pocket. It’s also difficult to understand some of the expressions made popular by secular artists on stage,” said Wisdom.

The group members are also of the view that promoters are only using “current” crop of artists while ignoring “foundation” ones.

“The promoters don’t give enough credence to history and variety. New artists are promoted at the expense of foundation ones,” said Wisdom.

Wisdom said he recently released a solo project entitled Jamaica Jubilee, his contribution to Jamaica 50.
