SINGER KIM NAIN IS LOVING LOVERS’ ROCK!

Though she was not around in the heyday of lovers rock reggae, singer Kim Nain says she has always been drawn to the sound made famous by artistes like Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs.

Nain, who is in her 20s, is keen to revive the softer side of reggae through her association with the Gorgon Entertainment Group, a Kingston company headed by Bunny Lee Jnr, son of legendary music producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee.

NAIN… it’s lovers’ rock, straight up, that’s my target audience

To date, Nain has recorded a clutch of songs for the label on rhythms that were popular during the 1970s. Some of them were produced by Lee senior for his famous Striker label.

“I do lovers rock, straight up. That’s my target audience,” said Nain.

Your Love Song, Deep In Love, Rebel and All My Trust are some of the songs she has done to date for the Gorgon Group. With contemporary female entertainers showing a preference for the deejay or singjay style, Nain believes there are more openings for singers.

“Apart from the Alaines and Tessannes (Chin) there’s not much in terms of lovers rock,” she said. “What we’re really trying to do at Gorgon is bring back that old reggae vibe with my flavour to it.”

Recording ballads on rock steady and classic reggae beats is nothing new. It has worked recently for British singer Bitty McLean whose hit songs Walk Away From Love and Make It With You were done on Treasure Isle beats from the 1960s.

Originally from Spanish Town, Nain says she has been recording since 2008. Her first release, Angel, came the following year and was produced by Delroy Pottinger.

Since then she has kept busy in the studio working for various producers including Nile Browne for whom she did Love.
