SINGER ISHAWNA PUTS HER SPIN ON BUJU BANTON’S “MURDERER!”

By Simone Morgan—–

After making local charts last year with Do it For Love (with deejay Specialist), singer Ishawna is looking to go one better with her latest track, Murderer.

The Downsound Records artist was in New York City recently promoting the reggae-soul number which features a sample of Buju Banton’s song of the same name.

ISHAWNA… I really don’t think dancehall music is dying. Buju Banton

Ishawna is pleased with the response to Murderer in the Big Apple. She says it shows talk of dancehall’s demise in the United States is overblown.

“I really don’t think dancehall music is dying as over the years hip-hop artistes have continuously emulated us. If it was dying Nicky Minaj and J Lo wouldn’t be doing dancehall,” she said.

She adds that it is unreasonable to compare the Jamaican music business to the industry in the United States.

“It takes more than just a hit song to enter the Billboard and other charts. The United States have numerous recording companies to push their artistes compared to us on this small island. So for us to even get a spot on the Billboard means we are blessed.”

Produced by Cordell ‘Skatta’ Burrell, Murderer is Ishawna’s most successful solo effort to date. She has done ‘combination’ songs with Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Voicemail and Demarco.
