Luciano – born Jepther Washington McClymont in Davey Town, Jamaica, back in 1964 – is widely known as “The Messenger” and his booming baritone has become a staple on reggae radio stations around the world.

“I don’t put colour in my audience,” Luciano told me the last time he headlined the Montreal reggae festival, back in 2007.  “And I don’t want negative dancehall in my thing.”

Luciano will headline on Sunday, August 18, alongside fellow reggae icons Yellowman, Cocoa Tea and lovers-rock legend Freddie McGregor.

Meanwhile, Saturday, August 17, is Dancehall Night, with headliners Beenie Man, Shaggy and Mr. Vegas among others.

Opening the festival on August 16 will be the Morgan siblings of the modern-roots reggae band Morgan Heritage, dubbed the “Royal Family of Reggae” (if you dismiss the Marley kids). This will be the quintet’s first time back at the festival in several years.

Ticket prices are $10 for Day One, $45 for each Day Two and Day Three, and $90 for a weekend pass. Click here for tickets and more info, and here for the official Montreal International Reggae Festival website.
