CECIL CHARLTON, FORMER MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE DIES AT 88!

Former Mayor of Mandeville, Cecil Charlton is dead.

Charlton died in hospital this morning at the age of 88.

He had been ailing for some time.

businessman and former chairman of the National Water Commission, Charlton is credited as one of the most popular mayors of Mandeville.

He was appointed mayor in 1974, and again in 1977 but his second term was aborted after he was expelled from the People’s National Party for certain utterances he made.

Charlton later joined the Jamaica Labour Party.

“He was a dynamic leader interested in people and the development of his town and his parish and by extension his country,” said former Speaker of the House, Calvin Lyn.

Charlton was highly regarded in Manchester and had the Cecil Charlton Park as well as the Cecil Charlton Hall named after him.
