KAREEM BURRELL PAYS TRIBUTE TO HIS FATHER PHILLIP “FATTIS” BURRELL WITH THE RELEASE OF “LIVING HEART!”

 By Howard Campbell—

Phillip ‘Fattis’ Burrell—-LIVING Heart, a 12-song tribute to producer Phillip ‘Fattis’ Burrell’s Xterminator Records, was released on March 11.

The album’s release marks the 25th anniversary of the label that helped nurture the careers of Ini Kamoze, Luciano and Sizzla. Burrell died in December 2011 at age 57.

Living Heart is compiled by his son Kareem Burrell through his XTM.Nation label. He says It includes “rare jewels” his father produced as well as songs from the fledgling XTM.Nation.

Among the songs on Living Heart are Pair of Wings by singer Nadine Sutherland, which was first released in 1995 as a tribute to roots singer Garnet Silk who died in December 1994.

The set also contains Do it Now, a XTM.Nation tribute by Beres Hammond to Burrell; and Stand in Love by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, which the older Burrell produced in 2004.

Kareem Burrell says he deliberately stayed away from a compilation of hit songs by Xterminator which was launched in 1989. “It’s important people hear these songs which are special.

It shows the strength of Xterminator and the standards my father had.” The Xterminator label has one of the most impressive catalogues in contemporary reggae.

Some of its finest productions are Where There is Life, the 1995 album by Luciano; and songs such as Hotter this Year (Ini Kamoze), Man With the Handle (Sanchez) and Run Things (Sugar Minott).
