The Opposition has welcomed the appointment of Carl Williams as Police Commissioner.

Williams, now a Deputy Commissioner of Police will take up his new assignment on September 15.

“We had felt that DCP Williams was among the likeliest of choices for the position, based on his performance in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, his 30 years of experience as a police officer and his reputation as a team player,” said Opposition Spokesman on National Security Derrick Smith.

He said Smith also brings to the office, years of experience at various levels of the force in fighting crimes such as narcotics and lottery scamming.

Smith has called for the men and women of the JCF to give Williams their full support.

He also said the JLP expects the Commissioner to be fearless and objective in fulfilling his mandate, and not to allow the Force be used in the pursuit of any agenda which is counter to the general interest of the society.

“We are encouraging him to pay full attention to the perceptions of corruption and violence in the police force. He must seek to remove the smear of corruption from the JCF, as well as the perception that there is no deeply held respect for the human and civil rights of ordinary Jamaicans,” Smith said.

Smith also said the JLP looks forward to a high level of cooperation and interaction with the new Commissioner, objectivity, transparency and honesty.
