BELMOPAN, Belize (CMC) —

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Belize, Bishop Dorrick Wright Friday spoke out against a planned concert this weekend by Jamaican artist, ‘Alkaline’.

“As the Bishop of Belize, I strongly oppose this event, which represents a serious error in judgement on the part of the Administration of Sacred Heart in allowing it to take place on their campus,” said Bishop Wright in a statement.

The concert is being promoted for Saturday night, the eve of Belize’s Independence anniversary celebration, at the Sacred Heart auditorium in San Ignacio town in western Belize.

The scathing rebuke of the planned concert, according to a statement from the Roman Catholic Bishop “represents a departure from everything we in the Church hold as good, wholesome and sacred”.

The statement said the “Sacred Heart College must not promote such rank hedonism” with Bishop Wright goes on to call on parents to forbid their children from attending the event.

“This artist’s performance will certainly impact your children’s innocence and spiritual wholeness in a very negative way,” Bishop Wright added.

The 20-year-old Jamaican artist, whose real name is Earlan Bartley, has run into problems in other Caribbean countries for his on-stage performances and lyrics. He has also been banned from performing in some countries.
