“MICROPHONES AND TAPE RECORDERS A PROBLEM FOR THE PRIME MINISTER” SAYS OFFICE OF PORTIA SIMPSON-MILLER!

The following is a letter from the Office of the Prime Minister through its Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Huntley Medley to all news editors in Jamaica.

Dear News Editors,

The Communication and Public Affairs Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister appreciates the continued coverage by your media house, of events which feature as speakers, the Most Honourable Prime Minister, the Minister without Portfolio (Information) and the Minister without Portfolio (Sport) in the Office of the Prime Minister.

I have noted that the current almost universal use of desk microphone stands by reporters for TV, Radio and sometimes Print media houses, is causing some logistics challenges at assignments.

This is particularly so when small podiums and those with an entirely slanted surface area are used by organisers. Not only are numerous desk microphone stands, microphones and tape recorders precariously perched on the podiums, but the speakers invariably have little room to accommodate their speaking materials including laptops, folders, papers and other presentation aids.

Quite often, they find themselves during their delivery, having to adjust falling mic stands, microphones or tape recorders. In an effort to streamline this situation we encourage media houses that require broadcast quality audio at these events to equip their coverage crews with boom (floor to podium) microphone stands for their mics; and we advise print journalists to utilise speaker boxes for recording with tape recorders.
