 LUSHY BANTON TACKLES US IMMIGRATION REFORM—

JAMAICA-BORN, US-based dancehall deejay Lushy Banton is hoping to strike the right chord with his latest single The Undocumented.

Released this month, and produced by Whatsitnot Entertainment, the single addresses American President Barack Obama’s effort to legalise millions of undocumented immigrants living in that country.

According to Banton, The Undocument — a social commentary — is merely echoing a contentious national issue which needs urgent reform.

“I have been  living in the United States for a while now, and although I may not be in that category, I see and hear the cries all the time. It’s not just from a Jamaican or Caribbean prospective either, the cries are far and wide, there are Hispanics  who are undocumented and other nationalities. So this was just my reality and it seemed only natural for me to express my concern in the only way I know how,” he said.

It is estimated that over 14 million illegal immigrants reside in the United States. According to an article posted in Washington Times, more than two million will be approved for President Obama’s deportation amnesty over the next few years. Once approved, they will be eligible for social security and health care benefits.

In his early ‘40s, Lushy Banton (whose given name is Wayne Brown) spent his earlier years in Grants Pen, St Andrew.

He started his career in the early 1990s and released songs including Jamaica, Best Obama Song, and Whatistnot. In 2005, he migrated to the United States where he settled in New Jersey.

According to the deejay, he is currently working on a track with Haiti-born US-based rap star Wyclef Jean slated to be released later this year.
