GUYANA’S RULING PARTY IS UNWILLING TO CONCEDE DEFEAT AT THE POLLS!

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Despite an announcement from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that the opposition coalition has won Monday’s general and regional elections, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) is not ready to conceded defeat.

Executive Committee member Gail Teixeira told local media that her party preferred to await the official declaration of the final results by the Chief Elections Officer.

“There has to be an official declaration by law,” she said when asked whether her party would be conceding defeat to the coalition of A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC).

On Thursday morning, Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield announced that the coalition won a total of 206, 817 while the PPP/C won 201,457.

However, the PPP/C is claiming victory and continues to point to allegations of irregularities.

GECOM had been under severe pressure to release the preliminary results of the polls, with former United States President Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center sent observers to monitor the poll, calling on the authorities to release the figures.

“The voters have spoken,” Carter said in a statement on Wednesday night.

The APNU+AFC leader Retired Brigadier David Granger said the business community was suffering as a result of the impasse, and he appealed to supporters to remain calm.
