VETERAN singer Frankie Paul is among several acts slated to perform on the fifth staging of the Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute at Youthman Promotions headquarters on Robert Crescent in Kingston. The two-day event begins with a stage show at 8:30 pm tonight. “Frankie Paul came to the studio a few days ago. He heard of the tribute and asked to be part of it. Dad had a lot of influence on Frankie Paul’s career… they did several songs together,” said Pashon Minott, daughter of Sugar Minott and part of the event’s planning committee.
“Many of dad’s foundation friends will be there,” she continued. These friends include singers Junior Reid, Triston Palmer, Little John, Carl Dawkins, Errol Dunkley and the Mighty Diamonds. Sizzla Kalonji, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal, Konshens, Voicemail and Tifa are also confirmed. Sugar Minott died of a heart attack at the University Hospital of the West Indies in July 2010. He was 54. His daughter explained why the event has expanded to two days.
“This is the first we’re going over two days. Day one is solely for live performances, while the second day is dedicated to sound systems, as Dad was deeply involved in Jamaica’s sound system movement,” she said. This was born out of a discussion with popular dancehall selector Ricky Trooper. “Sound Trooper and Caveman Sound will be playing some classic Sugar Minott selections throughout the evening,” she said.
A prolific singer, Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott is a dancehall giant who emerged as a solo act during the 1970s at Studio One. He is known for anthems including Herbsman Hustling, No Vacancy, Mr DC, and A House is Not a Home. Minott exposed many young artistes through Youthman Promotions, including Little John, Triston Palmer, Barry Brown, Tony Tuff, Junior Reid, Yami Bolo, Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Garnet Silk, Tony Rebel and Steve ‘Shalom’ Harper.
