Jamaican national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who continues to get much respect in the island country and diaspora communities around the world, will be recognized on Aug. 20 at a ceremony in the Bronx.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Jamaica Progressive League organization will commemorate the 128th anniversary of Garvey’s birth in at a free event at the Bronx County Building, 851 Grand Concourse, starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be music and traditional Jamaican food at the affair.

Back in 1965, after laying a wreath at Garvey’s grave, the Rev. Martin Luther King summed up the Jamaican leader impact on history: “He was the first man of color in the history of the United States to lead and develop a mass movement. He was the first man on a mass scale and level to give Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny, and make the Negro feel that he was somebody.”
Garvey, born in Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, on Aug. 17, 1887, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, an international organization that boasted millions of members worldwide.
