NADINE SUTHERLAND GOES DUB WITH “INNA ME BLOOD!”

Singer Nadine Sutherland is preparing to leave for the United Kingdom in a few weeks to do promotional work on her latest single Inna Mi Blood.

Released two weeks ago, Inna Mi Blood is a dub track produced by Guyana-born producer Mad Professor. She also said an album was in the works.

“Recording with the Mad Professor, who is a kind of dub music king, opened my eyes to the possibilities in that area. He has a whole network in England and the wider European continent and so we are seeing the early stages of what we hope will be something truly great. He and I have decided that this is not going to be a three-month song. For us, it is a classic in the making, so we are doing everything to make people aware of it and not rushing with anything. When I get to London, we will be shooting the video there and doing the media rounds. David Rodigan of BBC 1Xtra has really been showing us some love on this track and we really appreciate it… you know Rodigan doesn’t play something unless he really believes in it,” she told the Sunday Observer. The single has already made the Foundation Radio Network (NY) Top 30 Music Chart at # 12, and the South Florida Top 25 Reggae Chart at #13.

Sutherland –who is now in her 40s and has recently completed her Masters degree in cultural studies at the University of the West Indies — is proud of the music she did in the 1990s. But still has a burning passion to do more musically.

“I still feel that I haven’t done what I should do musically and, therefore, I owe it to myself to do what is in my heart,” she said.

Having won the Tastee Talent Contest as an 11-year-old, Sutherland grew up in the public’s eye. In the ’90s she ruled the charts with hits including Babyface, I’m In Love, the chart-topping Action (featuring Terror Fabulous), Man Haffi Wicked (with Spragga Benz) and Pair of Wings and defined a generation.

“I am happy I never let it get to my head at the time. But today young people come up to me and say how much them love those songs…they were not even born when those songs were released. And video directors can tell me how much they draw inspiration from the visuals in the Action video and that feels good. I guess I will have to sit down and research why the ’90s was such a special period for the music….a moment in the history of the music… I have to get to the root of it and write a paper,” she said.

“The years have taught me a lot and that is reflected in my music. Regarding growing older…. Tina Turner is one of my great inspirations. She had hits in her 40s and a fantastic body to match… so it’s all about how you see yourself. When I look back I appreciate the evolution that is my journey from my start with Bob Marley, who produced my first single Starvation on the Land, to the heady 1990s when reggae and dancehall took off in the United States and I was signed to Elektra. It has all been great and I am looking to expanding my music with this new album,” she continued.
