KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY – THE PANTON BROTHERS ARE NEW KINGSTON!

By Adrian Gomez–

Brooklyn, N.Y.-based reggae band New Kingston released its latest effort, “Kingston City,” in January.

Four days off from touring and Courtney Panton Jr. is still working. In fact, all members of reggae outfit New Kingston are rehearsing to remain on point.

“It’s important for us to stay on top of our game,” he says during a recent interview from Brooklyn, N.Y. “We’re proud of this album and we are looking forward to playing it for the audiences.”

Panton is one of three brothers who make up New Kingston. Rounding out the band are his brothers Tahir and Stephen Panton. On occasion, the trio’s father will join them on bass.

The band formed in 2009 and has released three albums. The latest is “Kingston City,” which was released in January.

“There was a lot of back and forth with this album,” he says. “Then we signed with Easy Star Records and they wanted to maximize the opportunity with the album. They set the date and we just waited for it to pass.

New Kingston had new material to perform but couldn’t because the album wasn’t released.

“That was difficult because we poured our soul into the new material,” he says. “We are a band that likes to keep moving forward and we had to stand still for a minute.”

Panton and his brothers recently spent a few days back in Brooklyn to record the video for “Protect Me.” It was filmed around the trio’s neighborhood, which held true to the vision of the song.

“We’re very proud of where we come from,” he says. “We wanted to be as simple as we could. Being a few blocks away from our home was comfortable.”
