BARBADIAN saxophonist Arturo Tappin is slated to headline Night of Horns, scheduled for the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston on Monday, November 30.

Hosted by the Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI), the gala cocktail and cabaret event will assist in financing the expansion of the WLI’s programme aimed at reducing/eliminating child sexual abuse.

Eva Lewis, chair of WLI, a special committee of the United Way of Jamaica, spoke to Jamaica Observer as to why the saxophonist was hand-picked for the occasion.

“Tappin is one of the region’s most celebrated, and has also travelled around the world sharing Caribbean music to international audiences. He is well loved by Jamaican audiences and has performed with a number of our reggae artists to wide acclaim,” said Lewis.

Known internationally for his jazz and reggae flavor, Tappin is no stranger to Jamaica. He has made five appearances at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and has performed with acts including Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Ernie Ranglin, The Wailers, and Monty Alexander.

On a somber note, Lewis said recent reports suggest an increase in incidence of sexual assault against children, and the WLI is committed to doing its part in assisting to stamp out this crime.

“Key to this is educating the population on how to prevent, detect and treat with child sexual abuse,” she said.

Since 2010, the WLI has sponsored and conducted several workshops in Kingston, training representatives from government and non-government organisations, educators, caregivers in children’s homes, and teachers and parents from the Voluntary Organisation for the Upliftment of Children (VOUCH).
