She crooned her way into many hearts with her rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s ‘Spotlight’ in 2008.

Having won the Rising Stars competition and pocketed $1 million, eight years ago, Davis appeared to have been on her way to stardom.

However, the light has seemingly gone dim on Cameal Davis’ career.

The career of the bubbly 31-year-old mother of one is not where she would like to be.

“I would agree that my shine did dim a little,” she told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Davis said the exposure she got in the immediate aftermath of the competition was unbelievable.

“I was on Sumfest, Jazz and Blues, every little show you could think of. I performed at places that I did not even know existed in Jamaica. After a while, though, it slowed down, I will attest to that,” Davis said.

Davis invested her $1 million payday in her education. She read for a bachelor’s in tourism and hospitality at The University Of The West Indies.

“Many persons may not have known this but, before I went into music, I was working in hotels. I have been a wedding planner for years, so I still do that. I still emcee and perform at weddings. I try to always blend music and my love of the hospitality sector,” she said.

Davis has found it to be difficult to break into the mainstream arena.

“It’s really difficult for female artists. Honestly, while men love to go to the studio and vibe, I prefer to be home and vibe. Personally, I think one of the reasons why I may not be where I need to be is that I did not have that person to push me to go out there to meet people and get acquainted with industry insiders.”

EXPOSURE

“Yes, you have to give thanks to Digicel because they’ve given you this exposure that you probably would not have gotten otherwise, but where there can be a little more focus is getting us managers, somebody who will teach us the business side of music so that you aren’t out there on your own. I mean, I’ve been doing recordings, but it’s not in the public eye as much as it should or as much as I would want it to,” Davis added.

Now working with Reggae Embassy, Davis admitted that she has not recorded any material in a while but plans to hit the studio in August as a Birthday treat.

“I’m taking it one day at a time. If opportunities come, I’m gonna seize them. Fans can look out for my wonderful vocals and my bubbly personality. The revamped Cameal is a more mature Cameal,” said the powerful vocalist.
