ST Mary Mi Come From, deejay Capleton’s popular charity show, returns August 5 after a three-year break.
Capleton pointed to the lack of a major sponsor as the main reason for the event’s hiatus. He told Splash that St Mary Mi Come From’s comeback is important to him.
“A mi birth parish, St Mary is everything to mi. Wi grow up there an’ wi know what suffering is all about,” he said.
Since the inaugural staging in 2000, St Mary Mi Come From has attracted a number of associate sponsors, but no major company which endorses it.
Capleton’s manager, Claudette Kemp, said given the show’s benevolence, it deserves that type of recognition.“We’d love to get a major sponsor because the show is a St Mary brand that gives back,” she stressed.
A number of institutions in St Mary, St Ann, Portland and St Andrew have benefited from the proceeds of St Mary Mi Come from, including the Port Maria Hospital, Islington High School, Annotto Bay Hospital, Oberlin High School, and Haile Selassie High School.
“Is not jus’ St Mary wi give to. Wi spread the glory an’ share the blessings,” said Capleton.
The colorful Capleton was among a rush of artists who emerged from St Mary in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Others included Admiral Tibet, Lady Saw and Mad Cobra.
At the time he launched St Mary Mi Come From, he was arguably the hottest name in dancehall, thanks to songs like Who Dem?, Good In Her Clothes, More Prophet,and Jah Jah City.
The first show was held at Clements Park and showcased top dancehall and reggae acts. It was last held at the Grays Inn Sports Complex in Annotto Bay.
