Lonely Girl, a hit song released by reggae singer Bascom X in 2004, has been given a new lease on life.

A few lines from the song’s chorus have been sampled by British all-girl group M.O in their latest single Who Do You Think Of.

Who Do You Think of is featured on the group’s EP Good Friends, which was released by United Kingdom-based Polydor Records.

Polydor has had a long relationship with reggae dating back to the late 1980’s when the label scored two major UK pop chart hits for Freddie McGregor, namely Groovy Situation (That Girl) and Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely.

When the Jamaica Observer caught up with Bascom X, he was unaware of the sample. However, after listening to the song, he had high praises.

“It’s music overall and it is a nice song. This goes to show that people are listening to your work, because obviously they like the sound and decided to sample it,” said Bascom X.

Lonely Girl was produced by Stephen Gibbs and released on the Joe Gibbs label. It is featured on the Hard Times rhythm, which also saw hits including That Day Will Come by Capleton, Ghetto Girl by Richie Spice and Living in Love by I-Wayne.

“Mi used to use the song as an intro for dub plates. I have been singing the song from as far back as 2001. The first person to play Lonely Girl was Olympian Juliet Cuthbert when she had her show on KLAS FM,” said Bascom X.

Lonely Girl did well on local charts as well as charts in New York City and South Florida.

Bascom X, who is based in Portmore, St Catherine, recently released the songs Mama You Bless featuring Junior X and Tek Weh Yuh Gal featuring Gyptian.

M.O (pronounced M point O) comprises Annie Ashcroft, Frankee Connolly and Nadine Samuels. The girl band was formed in 2012 by the members themselves, after their previous groups Mini Viva and Duchess had disbanded. The group was nominated for a Music Of Black Origin award in the Best Newcomer category in 2014.

In 2015, they signed a record deal with Polydor Records. They have, to date, scored two hits on the UK charts, Dance on My Own and Preach.
