BOB MARLEY HONORED BY NEW BEN & JERRY’S ICE CREAM FLAVOR!

For those moments when “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry),” Ben & Jerry’s now have a cure. Yesterday, on the 36th anniversary of reggae legend Bob Marley‘s death, the ice-cream gurus have announced a new flavor in his honor: One Love.

According to a press release, the new limited-batch treat features banana ice cream with caramel and graham cracker swirls, as well as fudge peace signs. The flavor was conjured with the Marley family, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit a youth empowerment program in the musician’s native Jamaica.

Ben & Jerry’s released a promotional video, embedded above, for the new flavor. In it, Ben & Jerry’s Jeff Furman, a longtime member of its board of directors, explained the choice.

“I mean, the words ‘one love, one heart,’ that touches everybody in every language,” said Furman. “That’s very connected to the kind of company we want to be. We don’t do it through music; we do it through ice cream.”

Because Marley gave voice to some many Jamaicans, Jacqueline Bryan, a counselor at One Love Camp in Tapioca Village, Jamaica, said, the camp continues to help youth find their own voices through music, creative writing and other means of expressing themselves.

One Love joins a long history of Ben & Jerry’s flavors named for musicians. Past flavors have included the Jerry Garcia tribute Cherry Garcia, Phish homage Phish Food, the Dave Matthews Band‘s One Sweet Whirled and Magic Brownies, Willie Nelson‘s Country Peach Cobbler, Getting Down With GusterQueen tribute Bohemian Rhapsody, John Lennon‘s Imagine Whirled Peace and Elton John‘s Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road.

Music festivals have gotten in on the game, too, with flavors named for the Newport Folk Festival, BonnarooGlastonbury and more.
