FOLLOWING what he described as a successful maiden run, dancer Chad “Global Bob” Torrington is preparing for a second run in Mumbai, India.

Global Bob visited the city in April, giving a two-day lecture on the history of dancehall dance. A return date is being ironed out, he said.

“Mumbai is a beautiful place. People came from all over to learn about dancehall and dancing…di kinda love they showed mi wasn’t normal,” Global Bob told the Jamaica Observer.

He said over 200 persons attended the sessions which were organized by the Smash Dem Crew, a Mumbai duo. Most who showed up were teenagers or in their early 20s, but a number of parents also came out to learn about dancehall culture.

“Wi teach dem a lotta moves from Bogle days, then go into things like the Cabbage Bounce an’ Nah Nuh Bones. Wi give dem different aspects of everything dancehall,” Global Bob explained.

Gerald “Bogle” Levy was Global Bob’s biggest influence as a dancer. He took dancing to another level during the 1990s, appearing in music videos by top dancehall acts and thrilling fans around the world with creative choreography.

Bogle was killed by gunmen in January 2005.

Global Bob, who is in his early 30s, has been dancing since his early teens when he was a student at Wolmer’s Boys’ School. In the past six years he has led dance classes throughout Europe, South America and Taiwan.

The classes in India came after a similar trip to London in March.
