Turbulence, Singer J, and Big Pop have released a song entitled We Are One.

The single, released in June, is part of a value-based initiative by the group out of concern for the island’s fast-rising crime rate and the need for students to adopt the right values.

“We could easily agree that music is power, so we recorded a single called We Are One. Crime and violence has formed a blanket over Jamaica. We have to put certain things aside and fight for our country. I have lost some of my friends to violence and some of them were also killed by our friends,” Big Pop told Jamaica Observer.

Co-produced by Jamlink Records and Echo One Production, We Are One calls for unity in the nation.

“Jamaica is celebrating 55 years and the We Are One single is a shining example of the united approach that is needed to build our nation,” he said.

Big Pop told Observer that since the movement’s inception in June, he and his team have visited a few schools across the island.

“What we are doing is to use music to emphasize moral values and also call on students to showcase their musical talent through impromptu performances. We will also be making stops in communities affected the most by violence, “ he said.

So far the entertainers have made stops in the Mahoe Drive community in St Andrew, George Headley Primary in Kingston, and Kitson Town All-Age in St Catherine.

“We did a charity show at Kitson Town so that we could get them flush toilets. They were still using pit latrines, so they definitely needed the upgrade,” he said.

According to figures released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, 585 people were were murdered in the island during the first six months of this year. This represented a 16 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.

Big Pop (given name Ricardo Rankine) emerged in the entertainment scene when he became a contestant on the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall series. He was placed second in the competiton.
