A 92-YEAR-OLD DISABLED JAMAICAN WOMAN, AMONG THOSE RESCUED IN TEXAS FLOODWATERS!

A 92-year-old disabled Jamaican woman was among four persons rescued from floodwaters in Houston, Texas, today as the American city continues to be inundated by rains.

The rescue came after an appeal by the elderly woman’s grand-daughter on social media, which triggered responses from Jamaicans at home and abroad.

The woman, who asked not to be identified to protect her family’s privacy, says her grandmother, her caregiver and two other family members were inside the flooded house for at least two days.

She says they became more fearful as the floodwaters began to rise yesterday.

The woman says several calls to get help from state authorities were unsuccessful as rescue workers were overwhelmed and could not come to their aid.

She says while she and other family members are safe there is still concern as the rains continue.

The Jamaican woman is expressing gratitude to those who assisted her family.

She says she has been in contact with other Jamaicans living in Houston and they have indicated that their homes have also been flooded.

In a post on twitter today, foreign affairs minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, said Jamaicans will be updated on the situation in Houston.

Up to 2,000 people have been rescued in and around Houston, which is the fourth-largest city in the US, where about 6.6 million people live in the metropolitan area.
