POPULAR KOREAN REGGAE ARTIST SKULL, HAS NOW EMBARKED ON A SOLO CAREER!

By Shereita Grizzle

Following huge collaborations last year with the likes of Stephen Marley and Sizzla, one half of Korean reggae duo Skull and HaHa has embarked on a solo career.

Skull, in an interview with The Sunday Gleaner, said that although the pair still makes music together, he professed an overwhelming love for the genre as the main reason behind his next career move. The entertainer said he needed to do some music on his own and felt that now was the right time.

“I am currently promoted as both a solo artiste ‘Skull’ as well as a duo ‘Skull and Haha’. The two are very different in music styles, so people can look forward to a more fun and diverse range of music being released,” he said, pointing out that like they did as a duo, he has been working hard in his home country, building a steady fan base as a solo artiste before introducing his solo projects to the world. “I have been releasing singles in Korea and performing in various countries in Asia. I think reggae music continues to grow over here and I will continue to expose this genre that has brought so much joy to them.”

DOING THE LOCAL ROUNDS

Although he has not performed in Jamaica since 2014, when he and HaHa stunned a local crowd at the Arts in the Park Festival at Devon House, Skull hopes to one day have that opportunity again, but for now, he is focused on getting his music circulated on the local market. Acknowledging that his music has to be of a certain high standard to be accepted by the highly competitive reggae industry, Skull told The Sunday Gleaner that since his introduction to the local masses, he has received positive feedback and has been steadily gaining more fans through his music.

“I have had a few opportunities to perform in Jamaica, but I would like to visit to release great songs and when Jamaica wants me to, I will naturally go to perform. Jamaica always deh pon mi mind,” he said. “I think Jamaicans perceive me fondly. I will always try to work harder to make music they will appreciate.” Skull said he visits Jamaica every chance he gets to ‘connect’, hoping that the ‘vibrations’ from the island of reggae’s birth will get his creative juices flowing. “Even in a short time in Jamaica, I feel and learn a lot of things mentally and musically,” he expressed. “Because of scheduling issues in Korea, I can’t visit that often, but I visit at least twice a year and keep in contact through the Internet.”

Skull, whose given name is Jo Sung-jin, is currently signed to Quan Entertainment and Sajah Records from his home country and is currently working on his second solo album. His last album was released in July 2014. While he has dreams of one day winning, or at least being nominated in the Best Reggae category at the prestigious Grammy Awards, for now, Skull is satisfied with just making music that is pleasing to the people. “I can always dream (about the Grammys) but I think I have a far way to go. If I become even a nominee for the reggae category or the world music category, that would be an honor.”

The entertainer who has also worked with Spragga Benz and opened shows for the incarcerated Buju Banton, said he is currently working on some tracks with a few ‘amazing reggae artistes’. He, however, did not go into any further details, telling his fans only to ‘look out for them’.
