This year’s 2nd staging of the “Entertainers against Crime and Violence” is in collaboration with the USAID-funded “Fi Wi Jamaica” project being executed by the University of Technology, Jamaica, under the leadership of Professor Rosalea Hamilton. Fi Wi Jamaica’s outstanding work with the vulnerable youths of the inner-city communities of Montego Bay was noticed by Conscious Music (Mackie Conscious, George Thomas, Carl Edwards and Paul Barclay) the organizers of the Concert. Fi Wi Jamaica’s work include a “Drums Fi Life” initiative which involves training high-risk youths to not only play and make bongo drums but also to understand important historical, cultural and social lessons related to drums and drumming. The shared objective of curbing crime, especially Human Trafficking and Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence (DIPV), formed the basis of the collaboration. One highlight of the event will be the announcement of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the Fi Wi Jamaica Songwriting competition during the prime time of the concert. The Songwriting Competition, coordinated by Mikey Bennett of Grafton Recording studio, seeks to use popular music to encourage participants to think and write about reducing DIPV as well as gender-based violence (GBV), and to foster behavior change.
