NEARLY 200 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN ST. JAMES’ STATE OF EMERGENCY!

The security forces in St James have reported that approximately 200 people have been arrested since Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the state of emergency last Thursday.

The police said operations have been conducted in the communities of Flanker, Norwood, Glendevon, Salt Spring and several other communities throughout the parish.

“We have taken into custody over 197 persons over a period of three days,” said Inspector Dian Bartley of the Constabulary’s Corporate Communication Unit (CCU).

The police said eight people were arrested for the brazen shooting incident along the Sunset Boulevard on Tuesday, January 16 where one man was killed and two others injured.

Two others were also taken into custody in relation to the shooting death of a man in Ironshore, St James.

Police said these men are expected to be charged later this week. Also, three other individuals have been charged with misdemeanour crimes and have since been granted bail.

There are currently 111 people remaining in custody, 10 of whom are to be charged with varying offences to include incidents of shootings and murders.

Among the detainees are individuals expected to be charged following consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The security forces are encouraging people to cooperate with them and exercise patience as they may encounter some inconvenience.

The state of emergency was announced following the increased number of murders, shootings, and the prevalence of lawlessness in the parish. Eleven of the 100 murders so far this year were committed in St James.
