Major refurbishing and expansion works, valued at over US$ $40 million, are to get under way later this year at the National Stadium and the Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium.

The projects, which are slated to take place over a period of 36 months, are designed to bring the facilities up to international standards.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, said special consideration will be given to ensure that the refurbished facilities are able to accommodate persons with disabilities.

She noted that an important pillar of the National Sports Policy is universal access to sport facilities and equal participation in sports by all Jamaicans.

The National Stadium, located at Independence Park in Kingston, is a cultural and sport complex.

It houses a running track, a football pitch, Olympic-size swimming and diving pools, the National Arena, the Leila Robinson Netball Courts, basketball courts, the National Indoor Sports Centre and the Institute of Sports’ corporate offices.

The Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium, located near Falmouth, is to be redeveloped to become the centre of sport tourism. Facilities include a cricket and football pitch. It has capacity for 25,000 people.

Upgrading of the stadiums is being undertaken as part of the Legacy Projects for the ‘Jamaica 55’ Independence celebrations.
