Trinidad and Tobago’s Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams has denied any police involvement in the murders of three men, including a Jamaican national. The police have called on the coalition People’s Partnership government to consider a state of emergency in the volatile Laventille area, along the east-west corridor. Police public relations officer, Inspector Wayne Mystar, says the Besson Police Station came under fire hours after the three men, including Sherwin Thomas of Jamaica had been shot and killed. He says preliminary investigations have shown that those involved in the killings were not a part of law enforcement and that witnesses have been interviewed. A Jamaican man who Canadian authorities are contending infected five women in that country with HIV is fighting his extradition. He is wanted by the Canadian authorities to face charges of aggravated sexual assault. It is being contended that while he was living in Canada in the late 1990’s he had sexual intercourse with the women knowing that he was HIV positive. Last month, he was ordered extradited after a hearing in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court. He has taken the matter to the Supreme Court seeking a writ of habeas corpus for his immediate release. The matter came before Justice Glen Brown this morning but was put off to next Tuesday to give his lawyer, Donovan Foote, sufficient time to join the Commissioner of Corrections as a defendant in the matter.
