LOCAL “HEAVYWEIGHTS” FOR REGGAE SUMFEST JULY 13 – 19!

TOMMY LEE SPARTA’S SHOWDOWN WITH THE DOMINICAN GOVERNMENT!

  Tommy Lee Sparta— BURT Samuels, attorney-at-law for embattled entertainer Tommy Lee Sparta, said he will be filing a claim with the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) if the Dominican Government does not start compensation negotiations, within the next 30 days, in relation to his client’s deportation. Tommy Lee Sparta, 26, whose given name is Leroy Russell, along with three members of his team, was deported from that Caribbean territory on Monday, February 24, a day after their arrival. The entertainer and his team had journeyed to Dominica to perform at a concert in Portsmouth. They were, however, denied entry and placed in custody under inhumane conditions before being deported. SISTER SASHA RELEASES HER DEBUT ALBUM “BREAK FREE!”

LEGENDARY GOSPEL SINGER OTIS WRIGHT, DIES AT 73!

   Otis Wright— GOSPEL singer Otis Wright died on Tuesday from renal failure. He was 73. His death was posted on a Facebook page which was created in his honour by his children. “As his children, we would like to thank you for all the prayers, calls, texts, and visits during this difficult time.   By Andy Gensler— Today Epic Records and Jeep launched a global brand campaign for the car company’s Altitude Edition in which Michael Jackson’s new single “Love Never Felt So Good” is featured in four 30-second TV commercials. The campaign will air from today (May 8) and run through summer. The track is from Jackson’s second posthumous release “Xscape” (out May 13, Epic) and was co-written in 1983 by Michael Jackson in a session with Paul Anka (who played piano on the track) and Kathy Wakefield. TONY REBEL LOSES COURT BATTLE IN COPYRIGHT CASE, NOW HEADS TO APPEAL COURT!

  Tony Rebel – File— By Barbara Gayle— KINGSTON, Jamaica: Reggae artist Tony Rebel is to appeal a decision of the Supreme Court to throw out an application to defend a copyright lawsuit. Rebel wanted the Supreme Court to quash a 2006 default judgment and allow him to defend the suit on the basis that he never knew about the ruling eight years ago. However, Justice Kirk Anderson held that since the documents were served on Rebel’s attorney, the singer cannot say he did not have knowledge about the default judgment. The default judgment was entered in favor of musician, Wayne Lattibeaudiere, after Tony Rebel failed to file certain documents within a specified period. REGGAE SUMFEST APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN!

Godfrey Dyer– By Janet Silvera– Two months ahead of Jamaica’s largest reggae festival, Reggae Sumfest, organisers, Summerfest Productions, have named a new chairman, Godfrey Dyer. Dyer, one of the founding members of the festival, took over from Robert Russell, who held the position for the last 10 years. Second stint This is Dyer’s second stint as chairman of the board which comprises eight directors and 20 shareholders. Commenting on the change in leadership, Dyer, also a tourism consultant, told The Gleaner recently that his priority was to ensure that Reggae Sumfest continues to be the festival of choice.
