ALLAN “SKILL” COLE IS SUING FOR COPYRIGHT PROFITS FROM BOB MARLEY’S “WAR” AND “NATTY DREAD!”

By K’Shema Francis—   Allan “Skill” Cole is suing Island, Universal and Tuff Gong music over the copyright of Bob Marley’s songs “War” and “Natty Dread.” Cole who was a Jamaican soccer star says he co-wrote the songs in the 1970’s and is suing for his share of the copyright profits from the songs and lawyer fees. Though Allan “Skill” Cole has decided to drag them through a New York City court, he is hoping there can be an amicable settlement out of court. NEAR SETTLEMENT REACHED BETWEEN ALLAN “SKILL” COLE AND CHRIS BLACKWELL, OVER UNPAID ROYALTIES!

BY HOWARD CAMPBELL—  Allan ‘Skill’ Cole—- IN Jamaican parlance, Allan ‘Skill’ Cole and Bob Marley were ‘bonifide bredrin’. They shared a passion for football and music. They wrote several of Marley’s most popular songs which Cole says was based on their bond. He never foresaw any legal complications. The 65-year-old Cole, who has been at odds with Island Records cofounder Chris Blackwell over unpaid royalties for decades, told the Jamaica Observer last week that they are nearing an agreement. “We are in the process of coming to an understanding an’ settlement over songs not written by Bob, or co-written by Bob,” said Cole. The songs involved are Zimbabwe, credited to Marley on his 1979 album, Survival, but actually written by Donald Leach; War, Johnny Was, Rat Race and Time Will Tell.  By Howard Campbell—-  Bob Marley and Dennis Brown— ALAN ‘Skill’ Cole remembers walking with Bob Marley along the intersection of Beeston Street and Chancery Lane in downtown Kingston, circa 1972, when Marley drew his attention to a teenaged boy coming down the lane. “Him (Marley) sey to mi, ‘Alan, a da likkle boy dey name Dennis Brown. Him can sing!'” Cole recalled. Marley’s Tuff Gong record shop was located in the area, then a hub for the growing reggae industry. Brown grew up at nearby Orange Street.
