KANGOL HEADWEAR SIGNS DEAL WITH THE CHILDREN OF THE LATE AUGUSTUS PABLO!

 By Howard Campbell—-  KANGOL goes rockers WITH PABLO—- KANGOL headwear, synonymous with hip-hop and dancehall artistes from the 1980s, has branched out into the roots-reggae market. The famous British brand, which has been around for nearly 100 years, recently signed a deal with musician Addis Pablo and his Suns of Dub group to sport their products. First released in 1991 by Greensleeves, ‘Rockers’ contains songs Pablo produced for his label of the same name, including Delroy Williams’ Three Men In A Truck Back, Jah Bull’s Free Jah Children and The Rastaman by Earl Sixteen. Pablo, an influential figure in roots-reggae and dub, died in 1999 at age 54. In October, Gussie Clarke (Reggae Anthology) From The Foundation, will be released. This is a double compact disc accompanied by a DVD documentary looking at the producer’s 45-year career. PATRICIA CHIN OF VP RECORDS GETS A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!

 Pat Chin (second left) Patricia ‘Miss Pat’ Chin, widow of Vincent Chin and co-founder of VP Records, received the Lifetime Achievement Award Thursday night at the Libera Awards in New York. Chin is the first female recipient of the award, presented by the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM). She gave an emotional acceptance speech at the Highline Ballroom. “I am honored to be the first female to receive such a prestigious award. Words cannot truly convey my feelings. I’m so pleased to be recognized by the independent music community and A2IM, the reason being that, the spirit of independence has always been so deeply ingrained in my heart and thus, the heart of my business and life,” said Chin, who received a standing ovation. SINGER YAMI BOLO RETURNED TO THE UK AFTER TEN YEARS!

 Yami Bolo— YAMI Bolo is one of many artists who were mentored by roots visionary Augustus Pablo. Fitting, then, that on his return to the United Kingdom after 10 years, he performed alongside Pablo’s son Addis. Bolo and Addis Pablo’s Suns of Dub group (which includes Trinidadian singers Jah Bami and Ras Jammy) did six shows in the UK, which took place in Newcastle, Nottingham and London. The main event was Kulchasplash on Easter Monday at the Electric Brixton club. Anthony B and Jah9 were also on the card. “Things went down well, everyone was well-received,” said Bolo. Bolo, Hugh Mundell, Junior Reid and Junior Delgado are just some of the acts who recorded for Augustus Pablo, one of reggae’s most creative producers and musicians. THE ANNUAL AUGUSTUS PABLO TRIBUTE SHOW TAKES PLACE IN KINGSTON JUNE 21!

By Howard Campbell— A tribute to Pablo—-THOUGH regarded as one of reggae’s visionaries, Augustus Pablo is largely unknown among the dancehall generation. On Saturday, his music and contribution to reggae’s expansion, will be remembered through the Annual Augustus Pablo Tribute Show and Rockers International Dub Weekender’ at Countryside Club in Kingston. Pablo (real name Horace Swaby) died in May 1999 at age 44. Guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, one of Pablo’s chief collaborators, will perform on the event with his Inna De Yard group. Mikey General, Dre Island, Micah Shemiah, Exile di Brave, Spliffy Dan, Suns of Dub and Pablo’s daughter Isis Swaby are also on the bill. Suns of Dub includes Pablo’s 24-year-old son Addis Pablo and Ras Jammy (Trinidadian Jamal Layne).
