BOB MARLEY RAISED A REALLY GOOD QUESTION ABOUT THE PROHIBITION OF MARIJUANA!

By Paige Lavender— Reggae superstar Bob Marley passed away 34 years ago Monday at the age of 36. On Feb. 6 of this year — which would have been his 70th birthday — people around the world celebrated the impact Marley made during his time on earth by honoring his music and his beliefs. According to Reuters, Jamaicans remembered the musician with a jam session, and Marley’s family is launched a “feel good social video movement” to honor Marley’s vision of a better world. FINDING “BOB MARLEY” FOR MUSICAL!

 (L) Bob Marley (R) Mitchell Brunings— MARLEY, the world premiere musical about Bob Marley, found its Bob in an audition clip for the television show The Voice of Holland, said writer and director Kwame Kwei-Armah, who cast Mitchell Brunings in the role. The musical, which will open this May at Center Stage in Baltimore, has music and lyrics by Bob Marley and centres on the two years Marley was in self-imposed exile in London, following an attempt on his life in Jamaica in 1976. Kwei-Armah had seen “bloody hundreds” of potential Bobs before a friend sent him a video last summer of Brunings singing Redemption Song at his audition for The Voice. BUNNY WAILER PREPARES TO DEFEND GANJA!

Wailers One Love ‘Legalize It! RastaGanja campaign was launched last Wednesday with an ambitious aim of raising US$1 million. The singer said the fund’s start date coincided with the Jamaican Government’s revamping of the law to make possession of two ounces or less of marijuana a non-arrestable, ticketable offence, that attracts no criminal record. That day also saw tertiary institutions — University of the West Indies and University of Technology — given the green light to grow marijuana for research purposes. LEGENDARY PRODUCER BUNNY LEE’S GORGON STUDIO GOES UP IN SMOKE!

 By Simone Morgan—  Veteran producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee points to a section of his studio that was destroyed by fire earlier this month. LEGENDARY music producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee’s Gorgon Entertainment Studio was destroyed by fire on March 9. According to the producer, all his music equipment valued at almost $100 million was lost in the blaze. The building, located in Duhaney Park in St Andrew, also houses a museum that contains Lee’s music archive. That section was spared. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, Lee said his engineer Newton Williams was at the studio when the fire broke out. Bob Marley— It has been 34 years since Bob Marley died in Miami after an illustrious career with the group he co-founded, the Wailers. Born in Jamaica, Marley was one of the world’s most successful recording artists who introduced millions of music lovers to reggae. RITA Marley— RITA Marley, the widow of reggae legend Bob Marley, is currently recovering after some health challenges last year. Rita’s son Ziggy confirmed that his mother was “doing good” following what he described as “some physical ailments”. The reggae king’s widow was noticeably absent from the celebrations to mark Marley’s 70th birthday last weekend. “She’s at the stage now where she’s slowing down and taking things easy, but she’s doing good,” Marley told the Jamaica Observer.
