BY HOWARD CAMPBELL—  Bunny Wailer— Forty years ago when Island Records released Blackheart Man, Bunny Wailers’ outstanding debut album, reggae was still underground music in the United States. JAMAICA’S MUSICAL INFLUENCE IS VERY STRONG IN BRAZIL!

By Shereita Grizzle— Jimmy Cliff— Reggae music was birthed in the trenches of Kingston, Jamaica, but today it has evolved into a universal language, a world music, loved and respected across the globe. The music has become such a powerful tool that it has transcended geographical boundaries and has crossed language barriers to connect people worldwide. It has become so popular that there are many artistes outside of Jamaica who are now making reggae music, including artists from the Portuguese-speaking country of Brazil. With the 2016 Olympic Games set for Rio, Brazil, in exactly 100 days, The Gleaner sought to catch up on the country’s entertainment scene, focusing specifically on the influence reggae music has had on that nation. Any simple research conducted into the culture of Brazil, particularly music, will show traces and influences of reggae. Bob … Read entire article »

BOB MARLEY’S MAJOR LABEL FLOP, 1972’s “REGGAE ON BROADWAY!”

Bob Marley in the studio during the sessions for Johnny Nash’s I Can See Clearly Now No, it’s not a musical—praise Jah—but a curiosity in Bob Marley’s catalog: 1972’s “Reggae on Broadway” was Marley’s first and only single on CBS, recorded and released before Chris Blackwell signed the Wailers to Island. Intended to break Marley as a solo artist in the UK, the single “sank like a stone,” according to biographer Timothy White. But imagine how Marley’s career might have been different if this fairly conventional rock/soul tune, adorned with screaming fuzz guitar and horns, had been a hit. “I’m in the mood / to give you some food.” Bob Marley and Johnny Nash in the studio Marley worked with Johnny Nash in Sweden and England during the early 70s, and he participated … Read entire article »

THE STUDIO ONE LABEL LAUNCHES ITS REISSUE SERIES WITH THE WAILERS’ DEBUT ALBUM!

Original copies of many of their releases go for big money on Discogs, but soon you’ll be able to buy new re-pressings of many of the label’s classics, as Yep Roc Music Group has partnered with Dodd’s daughter Carol on a series of reissues. The first release will be the Wailers’ 1965 debut album The Wailing Wailers, including the original ska version of “One Love,” which Bob Marley later re-recorded for his 1977 album Exodus. ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE RATES DRUMMER CARLTON BARRETT NO.27 ON BEST 100 LIST!

Drummer Carlton ‘Carlie’ Barrett— THE Wailers’ Carlton Barrett, who perfected the One Drop beat during the 1970’s, is number 29 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 100 Drummers. The list appears in the publication’s latest issue. Sly Dunbar, who came to prominence as a session musician during that period, is ranked at 65. Rolling Stone’s writers saluted Barrett’s unique style. “Nothing sounds more certifiably reggae than Carlton ‘Carlie’ Barrett’s tumbling tom-toms followed by the high, whip-cracking snare that launched a thousand tracks. Arguably the single most influential musician in reggae’s history, Barrett popularised the music’s signature ‘One Drop’ rhythm in the Wailers and Bob Marley’s solo band. The ‘Field Marshal’ and his bassist brother Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett decelerated rocksteady’s rhythm into the locked-in slow grooves that came to define classic roots reggae. His dry … Read entire article »

BOB MARLEY TREATED LIKE A GOD? DENNIS BROWN TREATED LIKE A DOG?

By socialyaad— – It’s despicable, disgusting and disgraceful the way the memory of the late great Dennis Brown has been treated by Jamaica, both in the public and private sectors. Once again the concert planned to honor the prince of reggae has been postponed. The month of February, which is the birth month of Dennis Brown came and went without any tribute being done in the memory of one of Jamaica’s great sons.
