VETERAN MUSICIAN BONGO HERMAN IS UPSET OVER HIS TREATMENT AT THE NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS EVENT, AT THE KINGSTON WATERFRONT!

By Marcia Rowe— While the explosive fireworks on New Year’s Eve brought fun and excitement to the Kingston Waterfront, it was not so for one of Jamaica’s veteran musicians. There was nothing sweet about the treatment of Bongo Herman, who felt he was unfairly treated at his first performance at Fireworks on the Waterfront. His dilemma began when MC, Miss Kitty, erroneously announced the group URIM7 as the next performer instead of the iconic musician. THE MARLEY FAMILY DONATES DRUMS TO CHARLIE SMITH HIGH SCHOOL IN TRENCH TOWN!

 The Marley family presented instruments last Friday to Charlie Smith Comprehensive High School in Trench Town. From left: Ackelie Burrell (teacher at Charlie Smith), Queshane Burke (student), Sherone Parsons, head of the Charlie Smith music programme, percussionists Bongo Herman and Maroghini. Ziggy Marley has donated instruments to Charlie Smith Comprehensive High School. The presentation was made last Friday at the school in Trench Town in Kingston. Sherone Parsons, head of the school’s music program, was presented with six drums (bass, repeaters, fundes), two flutes and tambourines by veteran percussionist Herman “Bongo Herman” Davis and Ali Cole (representing the Marleys) and percussionist Maroghini. REGGAE MUSIC “TUN UP” FOR PAUL ELLIOTT AT ALBUM LAUNCH!

PAUL Elliott launched his album, Reggae Music TUN Up, recently at Reggae City Bar, Camp Road, in Kingston. The event, a joint production of the singer, Stronger Productions, and Big Stone Records, also saw Lifetime Achievements Awards being presented to four cultural stalwarts — 92-year-old Garveyite, Queen Mother Mariam Samad, singers Bunny Wailer and Fred Locks, and percussionist Bongo Herman. “When I decided to do this launch, I said to myself, ‘I couldn’t do it without honouring the people who set the trend before me,” Elliott told the large gathering. PERCUSSIONIST BONGO HERMAN PLAYS THE BEATS FOR BLUES GUITARIST BURT HERRIN!

    Bongo Herman—- IN 50 years as a musician, Bongo Herman has played on numerous songs, covering the rocksteady, roots-reggae and dancehall genres. For his latest project, the veteran percussionist ventured into uncharted territory — the blues. Herman, 71, is among a cast of Jamaican musicians who played on Lightning Bolt, an album by Texan blues guitarist Burt Herrin. Though he is not familiar with blues music, the jocular Herman says he has been around long enough to adapt. “Mi play pon calypso an’ steelpan album. Mi play any music, the important thing is the feel yuh bring to the table,” he told the Jamaica Observer. Saxophonist Dean Fraser, bass players Aston ‘Famiy Man’ Barrett and Donald Dennis also played on the set which was released in July. Herrin will have a local launch in November. GREGORY ISAACS’ 64th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR JULY 27, IN KINGSTON!

By Basil Walters— Gregory Isaacs— A HOST of artists will celebrate Gregory Isaacs’ 64th birthday on July 27 at Blue Essence (Kings Plaza) in a show dubbed ‘A Hat Affair’. Patrons attending the event are expected to don Fedoras, a signature of Isaacs’ dapper outfits. A Hat Affair will feature a mix of Isaacs’ contemporaries as well as emerging acts. They include Leroy Sibbles, Errol Dunkley, Carl Dawkins, Junior Reid, Half Pint, George Nooks, Bongo Herman, Edi Fitzroy, JaH Cure, Aidonia, QQ, Noddy Virtue, Nature, Ray Isaacs (Gregory’s nephew) and Samantha Strachan.
