“SIGNING TO A CORPORATE BRAND IN NOT SELLING OUT” SAYS I-OCTANE!

By Curtis Campbell— I-Octane— Reggae artist I-Octane believes artists should not shy away from merging their talents with Corporate companies, as this is by no means a ‘sell-out’ move. The artist pointed to acts like Drake and Rihanna who have taken their careers to new heights due to collaborations with entities like Apple and Tidal respectively. According to I-Octane, especially in light of declining record sales, artists should focus more on branding and aligning with corporate companies. “We as Jamaicans don’t like to brand ourselves. As an artist sey him a guh brand himself, they start to say dem man deh sell out, dem man deh pants tight, dem man deh locks too neat and a bag of frivolous things. So it’s clear that we are not understanding the business part of it. So when a … Read entire article »

HOW DID THE LANGUAGE OF JAMAICA BECOME MAINSTREAM IN CANADA?

Dancehall and reggae music helped bring patois to the world, but it’s more than just slang — it’s a language of freedom.— By ETERNITY MARTIS— As a Torontonian, it’s not unusual to see white guys shake hands while greeting each other with a, wa gwaan? I wouldn’t say I particularly enjoy witnessing this — actually, it can feel quite painful — and it’s even worse when they point to the man dem over there, or unfurl several bombaclat’s. I wanted to crawl into a hole that time I encountered a bunch of dudes shouting “Gaza mi seh!” Over the past few years, most certainly because of Drake, these instances of public patois faux pas have increased. It seems like everyone has a take on what they perceive as Drake-cabulary — phrases like … Read entire article »

MR. VEGAS CALLS RAPPER DRAKE A “FAKE” FOR SAMPLING REGGAE ARTISTS WITHOUT GIVING THEM CREDIT!

By Sidney Madden—- Even though Drake‘s latest album Views is still dominating streaming and sales charts, one of his fellow artists is taking offense to Drizzy using dancehall records on the album without giving credit where it’s due. Mr. Vegas, one of dancehall’s most popular acts, vented his frustration with the Canandian rapper on Facebook on Monday (May 16). “Why did Drake link Beenie Man to on sing back that record if that’s the one he wanted? Or why let Beenie Man do something new?” asks Vegas. “So then I’m listening to the record further and at the end of the record when the record done, you can hear the record fin, Beenie Man doing the outro. So I’m like, Drake is rampaning my artists! You using my artists as intro men!” Vegas is referring … Read entire article »
