THE “CRIME FREE CHRISTMAS” CAMPAIGN GETS CORPORATE SUPPORT!

By Shereita Grizzle— Songbird Tessanne Chin joins campaign organizer and popular guitarist, Lamont ‘Monty’ Savory.— The Crime Free Christmas initiative, set to kick-start later today, has received a huge boost as several corporate entities have thrown their support behind the cause. Pledging to join hands with over a dozen Jamaican artists and musicians, companies such as Wisynco, FLOW and Innovative Signs are hoping to attract even more eyes to the project. Each company contributed to the production of the campaign, which will air in local media, traditional and online. The project will feature artists performing songs of the Yuletide season with their own unique spin. TESSANNE CHIN AND DUANE STEPHENSON ARE ADDED TO NEW YORK CITY’S “GROOVIN IN THE PARK” JUNE 26!

 Tessanne Chin— Promoters of Groovin in the Park have gone again for the reggae/Rhythm And Blues combo that has made it one of the most popular shows in the tri-state area. Tessanne Chin and Duane Stephenson have been added to the June 26 event at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York. They join Beres Hammond and Toots and the Maytals as confirmed reggae acts. ROOTS SINGER DUANE STEPHENSON DOING THE CENTRAL AMERICA ROUNDS!

 Singer Duane Stephenson performing in Costa Rica— DUANE Stephenson recently returned from Nicaragua where he did four shows. The singer performed in the capital, Managua (March 17), Bluefields (March 20), Corn Island (March 19) and Puerto Cabezas (March 23). Stephenson is the first Jamaican reggae artist to perform in the latter regions. South African singer Lucky Dube was the first reggae act to play there in 2006. “It was my first time performing in Nicaragua. Reggae is an emerging genre there in general, and for Corn Island and Puerto Cabezas it was a pleasure being the Jamaican pioneer performer. JAMAICAN REGGAE ACTS FAIL TO IMPRESS U.S. BUYERS, NUMBERS FROM SOUNDSCAN REVEAL!

BY KEVIN JACKSON—-  Top: Romain Virgo Bottom: American band Rebelution— THE latest Billboard Reggae Album Chart reveals that only eight albums have sold over 1,000 copies, reflecting another poor year in the American market for Jamaican acts. Figures compiled by sales tracker Soundscan show dismal numbers for most of the albums and EPs on the 50-strong table.   Count Me In by American band Rebelution has so far sold 51,339 copies, the best of the lot. The set has been on the chart for 76 weeks and is currently number five, selling just over 419 copies last week.Amid the Noise & Haste, the Grammy- nominated set from SOJA, another American band, has been in the chart over 67 weeks. DUANE STEPHENSON AND TARRUS RILEY GO BACK TO THE GHETTO FOR VIDEO SHOOT!

 By Kevin Jackson—  Reggae singers Duane Stephenson and Tarrus Riley— SINGER Duane Stephenson, who is preparing for shows in Africa, recently completed the video for the song Ghetto Religion. The single, from his Dangerously Roots album, is a cover of R Kelly and Wyclef Jean’s 2003 single. “Tarrus is my musical brother. When I thought about recording the reggae version of the song, he was the one who instantly came to mind. It was just fitting for him to be on the single as well, given where we are from the ghetto. We were able to make the song relatable,” Stephenson explained. The video is directed by Damion Gayle of Warrior Music, who was also behind Stephenson’s Rasta For I visual.
