MILLION DOLLAR FUNERAL FOR ROOTS SINGER EDI FITZROY!

Edi Fitzroy— The cost to bury Edi Fitzroy is said to be well over $1 million. Well, that is according to Ali Edwards, Edi Fitzroy’s nephew, who has taken it upon himself to plan the entertainer’s funeral. Edwards told THE STAR that the bulk of the money will go towards paying the funeral home for final rites preparation while the rest is to pay workmen, buy food and liquor as well as for decorations. Edwards said the funeral package cost $334,000 and that includes the coffin, marching band, wreaths, programs and a few announcements. He said that it will cost at least $250,000 to prepare the burial site and $134,000 to rent the Clarendon College auditorium for the funeral service. ROOTS SINGER EDI FITZROY DIES AT 61!

The Jamaican entertainment fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran reggae singer Fitzroy Edwards, better known by his stage name ‘Edi Fitzroy’ who passed away earlier today. The singer born November 17, 1955, would have celebrated his 62nd earthstrong this year. Born in Chapelton,Clarendon, he has to his credit albums – The Best Of Edi Fitzroy, The Musical Ambassador Years, Peace And Love, We A Lion and Deep In Mi Culture. He best known in the dancehall for popular singles ‘Check For You Once’, ‘Youthman Penitentiary’, ‘We A Lion’ and ‘First Class Citizen’ to name a few, and the  all time favorite  ‘Princess Black’. VETERAN PRODUCER TREVOR ELLIOTT READIES SUGAR MINOTT TRIBUTE, “SWEET LIKE SUGAR” FOR EARLY NEXT YEAR!

 Trevor Elliott— Sweet Like Sugar: A Tribute To The Late Sugar Minott is the title of an album scheduled for release in early 2017. It is produced by veteran Trevor Elliott for his Musical Ambassador label. He told the Jamaica Observer that some of the artists he recruited for the project were close to Minott who died in 2010. They include singers Tony Tuff and Tristan Palma. The former was a member of the African Brothers, an early 1970’s vocal trio that included Minott and Derrick Howard. Palmer was a childhood friend of Minott’s. He recorded a number of songs for the latter’s Youth Promotion label. Dean Fraser, D’Empress Marcia J Ball, Horace Martin, Asante Amen and Nina Karle also contribute to ‘ Sweet Like Sugar’. EDI FITZROY RELUCTANTLY COVERS THE EAGLES’ “HOTEL CALIFORNIA!”

And, secondly, when mi listen to Hotel California, it sound like some duppy thing. But my producers (Jacko Thelwell and Delroy Thompson) say is a big tune and that I should do it,” recalls Fitzroy, 61. He said the cover version was recorded in 1988 and eventually formed part of his repertoire.  “Whenever I performed it locally, the reception was great. A lot of people knew it, and always sing along,” he said. SINGER HORACE MARTIN RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM “SOUND CLASH SHOWCASE!”

Veteran artist Horace Martin returns with a new album called Sound Clash. The producer is also a veteran in the person of Trevor Elliott, on whose Musical Ambassador label this project is released. Musical Ambassador is known for releasing seminal material by Edi Fitzroy and the late Johnny Ringo among others during the first half of the 80’s. In fact, this album is largely built around classic riddims primarily played by Roots Radics from Fitzroy’s epic “Check For You Once” album. Some of the riddims are laced with overdubs and fresh horn arrangements to add some contemporary flavor. Additionally, this project is in the classic showcase format where each vocal cut is followed by its dub counterpart. GREGORY ISAACS’ 64th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR JULY 27, IN KINGSTON!

By Basil Walters— Gregory Isaacs— A HOST of artists will celebrate Gregory Isaacs’ 64th birthday on July 27 at Blue Essence (Kings Plaza) in a show dubbed ‘A Hat Affair’. Patrons attending the event are expected to don Fedoras, a signature of Isaacs’ dapper outfits. A Hat Affair will feature a mix of Isaacs’ contemporaries as well as emerging acts. They include Leroy Sibbles, Errol Dunkley, Carl Dawkins, Junior Reid, Half Pint, George Nooks, Bongo Herman, Edi Fitzroy, JaH Cure, Aidonia, QQ, Noddy Virtue, Nature, Ray Isaacs (Gregory’s nephew) and Samantha Strachan.
