REMEMBERING JACOB “JAKES” MILLER, MAY 4, 1952 – MARCH 23, 1980!

By Brian Bonitto —  Jacob Miller—- NEARLY four decades after his death, Jacob ‘Jakes’ Miller’s legacy is alive and well, according to Inner Circle founding member Roger Lewis. Miller, who died in a auto accident, would have celebrated his 64th birthday today. Lewis, guitarist for the Grammy-winning band, spoke about the singer’s legacy. “During his lifetime, Jakes’s contribution to Jamaica’s music was instrumental. As a singer/songwriter/social commentator, his music reflected the mood of the society,” Lewis told the Jamaica Observer from his Florida base yesterday. “He was one of the headliners at the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston in ’78. JAMAICA’S MUSICAL INFLUENCE IS VERY STRONG IN BRAZIL!

The music has become such a powerful tool that it has transcended geographical boundaries and has crossed language barriers to connect people worldwide. BOB MARLEY AND JACOB MILLER – A SPECIAL BOND!

In March 1980, Bob Marley and Jacob Miller traveled to Brazil for the launch of their label Island Records’ office in Rio de Janeiro. Within days of returning to Jamaica, Miller was killed (on March 23) in a motor vehicle accident in Kingston at age 27. One year later, Marley died from cancer in Miami, aged 36. This year, Marley would have been 70 years-old. His legend, built on timeless songs, continues to grow through album reissues and merchandise ranging from organic coffee to children’s books. Forbes Magazine named Marley among its five richest dead celebrities with earnings of US$21 million in 2015. He came in fourth behind Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and cartoonist Charles Schulz. First released in 1991 by Greensleeves, ‘Rockers’ contains songs Pablo produced for his label of the same name, including Delroy Williams’ Three Men In A Truck Back, Jah Bull’s Free Jah Children and The Rastaman by Earl Sixteen. Pablo, an influential figure in roots-reggae and dub, died in 1999 at age 54. In October, Gussie Clarke (Reggae Anthology) From The Foundation, will be released. THE SEARCH IS ON FOR TENEMENT YARD REMIXES!

Kalle Sveder, chief operating officer of SKIO Music, said the concept was inspired by the success of Tenement Yard (Newscarrying Dread), the hit song by Inner Circle and roots singer Chronixx. “Mattias Wachtmeister, former director of A&R at Warner Music Sweden, reached out to SKIO Music to get remixes for the Inner Circle release. He thought it would be fun to run a remix contest to hear young producers’ take on a classic tune,” said Sveder. LEGENDARY PRODUCER BUNNY LEE’S GORGON STUDIO GOES UP IN SMOKE!

 By Simone Morgan—  Veteran producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee points to a section of his studio that was destroyed by fire earlier this month. LEGENDARY music producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee’s Gorgon Entertainment Studio was destroyed by fire on March 9. According to the producer, all his music equipment valued at almost $100 million was lost in the blaze. The building, located in Duhaney Park in St Andrew, also houses a museum that contains Lee’s music archive. That section was spared. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, Lee said his engineer Newton Williams was at the studio when the fire broke out. JACOB MILLER TO BE “GUEST OF HONOR” AT REBEL SALUTE JANUARY 16-17!

Jacob Miller, one of the most influential singers in reggae, will be ‘guest of honor’ at next year’s Rebel Salute which takes place January 16-17 at Richmond Estate in Priory, St. Ann. Chief organiser Tony Rebel says it is a “great privilege” to pay homage to the chunky vocalist who was killed at age 27 in an auto accident in 1980. The Miller segment will feature Inner Circle and Third World, two bands Miller was closely associated. Both appeared on Rebel Salute in 2006 when it was held at Kaiser Sports Club in St Elizabeth.
