GEORGE NOOKS IS RIDING TWO OF BILLBOARD’S CHARTS!

 George Nooks— As a member of producer Joe Gibbs’ formidable camp in the late 1970’s, George Nooks had hit songs like Tribal War and Left With A Broken Heart. As deejay Prince Mohamed, he had a massive hit for Gibbs with Fortyleg Dread. Last week, Nooks entered the Billboard Reggae and Gospel charts at number 4 and 22, respectively, with the album Ride Out Your Storm. It is Nooks’ second collection of inspirational songs. Standing By, his first, was released in 2001 and signaled a remarkable comeback for the Dennis Brown protege. “It’s a great feeling, it means a lot to be on Billboard, especially the Gospel chart with all those big artistes. THROW-BACK FRIDAY: THE INSANELY CATCHY 1978 ONE-HIT WONDER “UPTOWN TOP RANKING” BY ALTHEA & DONNA!

 “Uptown Top Ranking” is an infectious hit single that knocked Wings’ Christmas blockbuster “Mull of Kintyre” off the #1 spot on the British pop charts in February of 1978. Although it only reached that peak for a single week after climbing the charts for months, the playful and whimsical rap, performed by teenaged Althea Forrest and Donna Reid, or Althea and Donna as the duo were known, is still fondly remembered. I’m surprised it hasn’t been used in a car commercial. Perhaps it already has been? The number was produced by reggae great Joe Gibbs, apparently for fun.  By Simone Morgan—  Veteran producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee points to a section of his studio that was destroyed by fire earlier this month. LEGENDARY music producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee’s Gorgon Entertainment Studio was destroyed by fire on March 9. According to the producer, all his music equipment valued at almost $100 million was lost in the blaze. The building, located in Duhaney Park in St Andrew, also houses a museum that contains Lee’s music archive. That section was spared. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, Lee said his engineer Newton Williams was at the studio when the fire broke out.
