HOW DID SONGWRITER ERNIE SMITH BECOME A LEGEND?

 By Roy Black— Ernie Smith— Last week’s Music Diaries revealed how songwriters, especially those in early popular music, made heroes and heroines out of singers through their writing, while they themselves dwelled in the shadows. The twist to that is that several songwriters who had no intention of, or never even dreamed of becoming singers, ended up in that field by some strange hand of fate. One such example of this is the Jamaican rocksteady and reggae crooner Ernie Smith, who, for the purpose of this retrospective, is particularly timely as he celebrates his 72nd birthday this past week. SUGA ROY TO RELEASE TRIBUTE ALBUM, “HONORING THE KINGS OF REGGAE” NOVEMBER 4!

 Zareb, Suga Roy and Conrad Crystal— November 4 is the official release date for Honoring The Kings of Reggae, a tribute album produced by deejay Suga Roy. The 19-song set includes covers of classic reggae songs such as Shantytown by Desmond Dekker and Bob Marley’s So Much Trouble. The latter is done as Trouble by Suga Roy, Sizzla, Jahmali, Conrad Crystal, and Zareb. “Is my favorite Marley song; anywhere in the world mi go mi perform it,” said Suga Roy. The House of Riddim Band from Austria, drummer Kirk Bennett, guitarist Winston ‘Bo Pee’ Bowen, and bassist Danny Dennis of the Firehouse Crew played on Trouble. BOB MARLEY’S MAJOR LABEL FLOP, 1972’s “REGGAE ON BROADWAY!”

Bob Marley in the studio during the sessions for Johnny Nash’s I Can See Clearly Now No, it’s not a musical—praise Jah—but a curiosity in Bob Marley’s catalog: 1972’s “Reggae on Broadway” was Marley’s first and only single on CBS, recorded and released before Chris Blackwell signed the Wailers to Island. Intended to break Marley as a solo artist in the UK, the single “sank like a stone,” according to biographer Timothy White. THE ANTIGUAN GOVERNMENT TO FUND MOVIE ABOUT BOB MARLEY!

 By Howard Campbell—  Rudy Langlais—- A Bob Marley movie focusing on his relationship with American impresario Danny Sims and singer Johnny Nash is to be funded by the Antiguan government. Rebels is the title of the film which will be produced by Golden Island Filmworks, an independent company recently formed by St Kitts-born producer Rudy Langlais. Langlais’ credits include movies like The Hurricane (starring Denzel Washington) and Sugar Hill which had Wesley Snipes in the lead role. His main partners in the venture are entrepreneur Valmiki Kempadoo, producer Don Allan and veteran film executive Neil Sacker. The terms of their deal with the Antiguan government sees the latter investing US$125 million in five feature films to be shot on the island.
