JOSS STONE EXPECTED REACTION BEING NAMED “REGGAE ARTIST OF THE YEAR” BY BILLBOARD MAGAZINE!

Joss Stone— NEARLY five months after Billboard Magazine controversially named her its Reggae Artist Of The Year, British singer Joss Stone has given her take on the furor that accompanied the announcement. In an interview with Billboard’s Soul Sisters Podcast, aired yesterday, Stone said she was not surprised at the reaction. In fact, when Damian Marley suggested she record a reggae album five years ago, she predicted an uproar.“Everyone will be so mad with me if I do that!” she recalled telling him. Her warning was prophetic. Water For Your Soul, which Marley co-produced, was the best-selling reggae album of 2015. At the time Billboard ‘crowned’ Stone in late December, it had sold 27,000 copies.   Reaction was swift and harsh. Many critics claimed Stone’s album was not reggae and she won the award because she is white. On Harry’s … Read entire article »

THERE ARE PLENTY OF REGGAE/DANCEHALL ALBUMS, BUT FEW TAKERS!

By Kevin Jackson—    Grammy Award-winning reggae band Morgan Heritage.— Strictly Roots by Morgan Heritage won Best Reggae Album at the 58th Grammy Awards on February 15, but unlike their pop counterparts, it has not got a major sales boost. Released on the group’s CTBC label, Strictly Roots has sold 6,005 copies in the United States. A week after the Grammys, the album sold 268 copies; last week, it moved an additional 128 copies. The Morgan Heritage set is a reflection of continued downward sales for reggae and dancehall. The number one album on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart, Set in Stone by California dub band Stick Figure, sold 280 copies over the past week. Released in November 2015, Set in Stone has to date sold 11,586 copies.   Theory of Reggaetivity, the third studio effort from Assassin … Read entire article »

COCOA TEA IS COOL WITH JOSS STONE “TOUCHING” HIS SONG!

By Howard Campbell—  Cocoa Tea— MUCH has been made about British soul singer Joss Stone being named ‘Reggae Artist of The Year’ by Billboard Magazine for the album Water for Your Soul. With all the furore over that title, Stone, showing her dancehall/roots chops on the song Harry’s Symphony, has gone largely unnoticed. The uptempo number from Water for Your Soul hears her giving shout-outs to songs like Cocoa Tea’s Young Lover. The 28-year-old Grammy winner also ‘touches’ Barrington Levy’s On The Telephone, Be Careful by Matthew McAnuff and Inner Circle’s Bad Boys.Young Lover gets the lion’s share of attention on Harry’s Symphony. Cocoa Tea, who recorded it for producer Lloyd ‘King Jammys’ James in 1987, said he was recently made aware that Stone ‘used’ parts of the song. “I haven’t heard from her people but I’ve … Read entire article »

BOUNTY KILLER BLASTS BILLBOARD MAGAZINE, THE JAMAICAN GOVERNMENT AND THE MARLEY BOYS!

NEVER one to shy away from controversy, Bounty Killer has hit out against Billboard Magazine for naming British singer Joss Stone Reggae Artist of The Year. The fiery deejay also had some harsh words for Jamaica’s Government. He took to Instagram after reading a story published in the Jamaica Observer on December 22 about Stone’s latest accomplishment. Addressing the Jamaican government, Bounty Killer (given name Rodney Pryce) ques- tioned their seriousness about preserving reggae. “What measures are implemented for a genre birthed on the island which is widely celebrated elsewhere, giving others the chance to benefit more than us? How many more Matisyahus, Eddy Murphys and Josh Stones will there be to benefit more than our people who do not fall short on talent?” He implored the Government to desist from chastising reggae/dancehall … Read entire article »

JOSS STONE’S REGGAE TITLE ANGERS FANS, AFTER HER ALBUM IS DECLARED BIGGEST SELLER OF 2015!

British soul singer Joss Stone has come top of two of Billboard Magazine’s end of year reggae chart rundowns. The star, who released Water for Your Soul this year, was reggae artist of the year and had the biggest selling reggae album of 2015 in the US. The record spent eight weeks at the top of the chart, selling 29,000 copies. She beat a live album from Bob Marley, Easy Skanking in Boston 78, into second place but news hasn’t gone down well with hardcore reggae fans. Many have said that they think it’s ridiculous that a former soul singer with one reggae-themed album has topped the chart. Earlier this year Joss Stone said she’d recorded a reggae album after encouragement from Damian Marley. She told FaceCulture: “I’m just writing, and it’s like we just have … Read entire article »

VETERAN PRODUCER/SONGWRITER WILLIE LINDO SPEAKS HIS MIND!

Veteran producer and songwriter, Willie Lindo, spoke to the Sunday Observer from his North Miami studio earlier this week. He said he noticed this “deliberate” trend since the 1970s. “I have a little Oxford Dictionary that says ‘Rasta is a member of a Jamaican sect…’ while reggae is a ‘West Indian style of music’ — not Jamaican. But a phase out system a gwaan. I understand that there is a global financial crunch, but Jamaican acts and musicians are getting fewer and fewer shows compared to their non-Jamaican counterparts. Even if they (foreign acts) come to Jamaica to put on a show, they don’t want local musicians to work with,” he said. “Just like what dem a do with Japan Splash, a mostly Japanese artists on it, no Jamaican nuh deh pon it. Maybe they might … Read entire article »

ENGLISH SOUL-SINGER JOSS STONE DIVES INTO REGGAE ON NEW ALBUM “WATER FOR YOUR SOUL!”

By Eric R. Danton— Courtesy of Press Here Publicity In some ways, Joss Stone’s new album, “Water for Your Soul,” is a departure for the big-voiced English soul singer. She and Damian Marley produced the 14-song collection, which has a pronounced reggae flavor with hip-hop accents. In another way, Stone says, the new direction was almost inevitable. “Water for Your Soul” premieres today on Speakeasy. Stone worked with Marley in SuperHeavy, a supergroup that also included Mick Jagger,Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and Indian composer A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”). Such projects have helped expand Stone’s musical horizons. “It makes music more fun to enjoy all the different sounds of the world,” she says. “Water for Your Soul” was an album years in the making, starting five or six years ago when Stone wrote the deep-groove reggae song “Wake Up,” which features toasting from Marley. “A lot of … Read entire article »
