VETERAN PRODUCER KING JAMMY, CALLS FOR JAMAICA’s OWN ANNUAL “REGGAE CARNIVAL!”

By Curtis Campbell— King Jammy at the sound system’s controls.— Reggae and dancehall music producer King Jammy is requesting that the Government or private promoters host a carnival annually in celebration of Jamaica’s rich musical culture. “Reggae gets sponsorship abroad, it’s only out here they treat it so bad. In France, over 50,000 people turn out to venues filled with sponsors for reggae music. In Trinidad, sponsors support soca, and in Jamaica, we support soca … . So why can’t we support reggae too? Maybe we need to start boycott some of these sponsors to let them know we need sponsorship,” he told THE STAR. “We need our own reggae carnival to celebrate our music even once every year. DUCKIE SIMPSON, FOUNDER OF BLACK UHURU, SOUNDS OFF AGAINST PRODUCER KING JAMMY AND VP RECORDS!

By Howard Campbell—  Duckie Simpson— Black Uhuru founder Duckie Simpson says he has been ‘badly disrespected’ by producer Lloyd ‘King Jammy’ James and VP Records over the release of King Jammy Presents New Sounds Of Freedom, a tribute to the group’s first album. According to Simpson, he was offered US$500 by VP as proceeds from the set, which he considers a slap in the face. He said he was sent a contract by James in late 2015 which would give him half of the album’s sales. Simpson said he signed the contract but has not earned from James since. “Him don’t send back a signed contract or nuthin’…I don’t hear gun fire from him,” said Simpson, adding: “I never drink a cold beer from that album yet.” ‘That album’ is Black Sounds of Freedom, which inspired King … Read entire article »

SINGER SUPER BLACK IS STILL AT IT AFTER “DEH WID YOU!”

 Super Black— The summer of 1987 was a hot time for singer Super Black, who had the dancehall rocking to his hit song, Deh Wid Yuh . Produced by Lloyd ‘King Jammy’s James, it remains his signature. Even though he continues to record, Super Black acknowledged the difficulty of topping his biggest hit. “Is a great song, but we’d have a likkle name out deh before dat song tek off. You may even have owned one just like it. Launched in 1981, the cream machine came with 37 keys, 22 different instrument sounds, six onboard rhythms and a dedicated mini bass keyboard. It cost around $150 or, adjusting for inflation, about $400 if it were on sale today. Beneath that beige plastic, however, the MT40 hid a secret. A “rock” preset that, once discovered, would reverberate in popular music for the next 30 years.
