SPICE, ALKALINE, PROTOJE, AMONG FIVE VYING FOR THE UK’s MOBO AWARD, NOVEMBER 4!

BY KEVIN JACKSON —-    Spice (Philp Lemonte Photo)— FOR the first time in eight years, a female artist has been nominated in Best Reggae Act category of the United Kingdom’s (UK) MOBO Awards. Dancehall act Spice is up against her male counterparts Alkaline, Popcaan, Kranium, and Protoje. To date, three female reggae artists have been nominated in the category since the award’s inception in 1996. British reggae singer Sylvia Tella and Jamaica’s Etana were nominated in 1997 and 2008, respectively. This is the fifth nomination for Popcaan, who is last year’s winner. DANCEHALL ARTIST KRANIUM’S DEBUT ALBUM “RUMORS” GETTING LUKEWARM RECEPTION!

BY KEVIN JACKSON—  Kranium— Rumors, the debut album from singer Kranium, is currently number six on Billboard’s Reggae Album Chart with first-week sales of less than 1,000 copies. The album was released digitally by Atlantic Records on October 16. It has songs produced by Ricky Blaze and LMR Pro. There has been considerable buzz surrounding Kranium and his album since he signed with Atlantic early this year. Driven by the minor hit song, Nobody Has to Know, Rumors has 12 tracks including Lifestyle, Between Us, Stamina and a remix of Nobody Has to Know featuring Ty Dolla Sign. Kranium (real name Kemar Donaldson) is originally from Montego Bay. He migrated to Florida 10 years ago before settling in New York. Kranium— SINGER Kranium has reportedly signed with Atlantic Records. The entertainer, best known for the hit single Nobody Has to Know, announced the ‘signing’ on his Twitter page this week. Efforts to get a comment from Kranium were unsuccessful. Born Kemar Donaldson in St James, Kranium moved to Florida in 2005. FROM THE BIG APPLE BACK TO YARD!

No surprise then, that the Big Apple has produced a number of dancehall heavyweights who made it out of that region before breaking in Jamaica. Here are some of them: Mr Easy (real name Ian Dyer) was born and raised in east Kingston but migrated to the Flatbush area of Brooklyn in the early 1980s. He signed with Quincy Jones’ Quest label (distributed by Warner Bros) which released his debut album Call Me Mr Easy. He later teamed with Dave Kelly’s Madhouse company and scored hits on the Joyride ‘riddim’ (Funny Man) and Tony Kelly’s Buy Out beat (She Drives Me Crazy).
