JAMAICA’S RASTAS SAY “NO” TO THE CARIBBEAN COURT OF JUSTICE!

By Vernon Davidson— THE Rastafari M i l l e n n i u m Council (RMC) says it is opposed to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), arguing that the court system, particularly in Jamaica, needs to be repaired before any thought is given to full participation in the regional entity. “The justice system here, as reported by the justice minister and others, has one of the worst backlog of cases,” RMC Consultant Maxine Stowe told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. She pointed to her own experience with the estate of her late uncle, Clement ‘Sir Coxone’ Dodd, founder of the famous Studio One, which turned out some of Jamaica’s best recordings and became synonymous with ska, rocksteady and reggae. Dodd died in May 2004. “It’s been 11 years, and at least three family … Read entire article »

HIGH HOPES AFTER THE GLOBAL GANJA MOTORCADE!

Maxine Stowe and Bunny Wailer—- THREE-TIME Grammy winner Bunny Wailer, singer Denroy Morgan and members of the Mystic Revealers band were among the artists who participated in Saturday’s Global Ganja Motorcade/March. The 74-kilometre trek from Emancipation Square in Spanish Town, St Catherine to Goodyear Oval in Morant Bay, St Thomas was reminiscent of the 1865 march of Jamaica’s National Hero Paul Bogle. “The motorcade was well supported with 40 to 50 vehicles,” Maxine Stowe, music insider and ganja legalisation advocate, told the Jamaica Observer. The Global Ganja Motorcade/March is Wailer’s latest attempt to shed light on recent changes in Jamaican law regarding the use and production of marijuana. The first was in 1996, while the second was on April 20 last year. The motorcade is linked to the 150th anniversary of the Morant Bay Rebellion, of … Read entire article »

By Brian Bonitto—-  Top: Bunny Wailer Bottom: Maxine Stowe— VETERAN reggae singer Bunny Wailer has turned to crowd funding site Indiegogo to secure contributions in retaining international lawyers to protect Rastafari interests in marijuana (ganja). Wailers One Love ‘Legalize It! RastaGanja campaign was launched last Wednesday with an ambitious aim of raising US$1 million. The singer said the fund’s start date coincided with the Jamaican Government’s revamping of the law to make possession of two ounces or less of marijuana a non-arrestable, ticketable offence, that attracts no criminal record. That day also saw tertiary institutions — University of the West Indies and University of Technology — given the green light to grow marijuana for research purposes. So far, Indiegogo contributions have amounted to a paltry US$100. But Wailer remains optimistic. “Ganja is tied to the Rastafari culture in … Read entire article »
