SPICE, ALKALINE, PROTOJE, AMONG FIVE VYING FOR THE UK’s MOBO AWARD, NOVEMBER 4!

BY KEVIN JACKSON —-    Spice (Philp Lemonte Photo)— FOR the first time in eight years, a female artist has been nominated in Best Reggae Act category of the United Kingdom’s (UK) MOBO Awards. Dancehall act Spice is up against her male counterparts Alkaline, Popcaan, Kranium, and Protoje. To date, three female reggae artists have been nominated in the category since the award’s inception in 1996. British reggae singer Sylvia Tella and Jamaica’s Etana were nominated in 1997 and 2008, respectively. This is the fifth nomination for Popcaan, who is last year’s winner. PROTOJE HEADS OUT ON A U.S. TOUR!

 Protoje— ONE year after he launched his third album, Ancient Future, sing-jay Protoje kicks off the Ancient Future Live tour Saturday at Hope Gardens in St Andrew. The gangly artiste will perform the 11 songs from the set which he co-produced with Phillip ‘Winta’ James. Ancient Future includes the hit songs Who Knows and Stylin’. The former, done with Chronixx, has done well in the United Kingdom. “He’s having a lot of success with Who Knows and there is demand for him in Europe and North America. But we have to do some shows at home, that’s important,” said Lorna Bennett, Protoje’s manager. Bennett told the Jamica Observer that Protoje did 60 shows in Europe late last year, mainly clubs and festivals. AFTER FOUR NOMINATIONS, POPCAAN FINALLY WINS THE MOBO AWARD!

 Popcaan— After securing four nominations in as many years, deejay Popcaan finally won the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act. The event took place on Wednesday night at the Leeds First Direct Arena, in west England. Popcaan, who was not present, won over Chronixx, London-based dancehall artist Stylo G, singjay Protoje and Omi, whose Cheerleader topped the British national chart in 2015. Popcaan is making waves locally with songs including Way Up and Weed is My Best Friend. He has a strong following among dancehall fans in the United Kingdom, thanks to several well-received songs. OMI, POPCAAN, AND CHRONIXX AMONG NOMINEES FOR 2015 MOBO AWARDS IN LONDON, NOVEMBER 4!

By Kevin Jackson—-  Popcaan THE success singer OMI enjoyed in 2015 has been rewarded with a nod for Best Reggae Act at the 20th annual UK MOBO Awards. OMI competes with Popcaan, Chronixx, Protoje and last year’s winner Stylo G in that category. The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) ‘recognises artistes of any ethnicity or nationality performing black music’. This is the first nomination for both OMI and Protoje. It is the second for Chronixx and third for Stylo G while Popcaan earns his fourth nomination. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, OMI commented on the nomination. “This is truly one of my greatest achievements of 2015.
