AS CARNIVAL GROWS IN JAMAICA, ARTISTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DABBLE IN SOCA!

By Shereita Grizzle— Macka Diamond— As soca continues to grow in Jamaica, more artists are being encouraged to dabble in the genre. Several industry insiders believe that artists should not limit themselves to one genre, but should try their hands at as many as they can. Popular publicist Keona Williams told THE WEEKEND STAR that having seen the rate at which carnival is growing in Jamaica, recording artists should think about releasing more soca-influenced songs. “I think it’s best for an artist to be versatile and possess a catalog of songs that can please fans from different regions,” she said. “The increase to four carnival bands in Jamaica is a clear indication that support for the genre is on the rise, so artists should do what makes them marketable everywhere.” ZJ Rush agreed. The selector-turned-recording artist … Read entire article »

POPCAAN WINS HIS SECOND MOBO AWARD!

Popcaan came out on top to win the 2016 MOBO award for Best Reggae Act. This marks the second straight win for the “Unruly Boss” deejay. This year it was Popcaan and Alkaline who were the two hot favorites to win the award. But Spice, Protoje and Kranium were also nominated in the category. Spice became the first female hardcore dancehall artist to receive a MOBO nomination and only the third woman in the reggae category. There is no doubt that Popcaan has been seeing great success locally and internationally over the last few years, scoring major international collaborations with the likes of Drake and Young Thug. Despite having a great year in dancehall, Popcaan saw at least one bad patch this year with his impromptu beef with Mavado. The “Good Times” deejay … Read entire article »

DANCEHALL ARTIST SPICE, FACES BACKLASH FOR RAUNCHY PERFORMANCE HONORING ATHLETES!

BY: DENIECA BROWN  The blame game has started after Spice’s awkward performance for athletes at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday. Minutes before she was to hit the stage to perform  at an event to honour Jamaican athletes, Spice tweeted “#I got this”, showing off her fuzzy shoes. But, while her confidence was ‘Up’ and her energy was super high, a scantily-clad Spice -with posterior visible – was greeted with awkward silence from an audience that included Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Governor General Sir Patrick Allen among other dignitaries. Spice’s performance was in stark contrast to the well-received set delivered by Kevin Downswell.  Nothing in the gospel singer’s set seemed to have prepared the audience for the ‘spicy’ performance by the dancehall artist. Among the athletes being honored, Shelly-Ann Fraser- Pryce and Yohan … Read entire article »

FEMALE ARTISTS ARE ASKING FOR MORE FROM REGGAE SUMFEST 2016!

By Curtis Campbell— The organiZers of Reggae Sumfest have been forced to respond to suggestions that the festival, which takes place in Montego Bay, St James, later this month, is bias against women. Only three women, Spice, who is arguably the number one female dancehall artist in the island, Clymaxx and Ishawna have been booked for this year’s show, leading critics to declare that it is a ‘bullfest’. Robert Russell, a member of Summerfest Production, which is staging the July 17-23 festival, conceded that more women could have been included in the line-up. “To be honest, we could have had more. It was perhaps an oversight,? Russell told THE STAR yesterday. “We expect the three that are booked will do very well. We look towards a good Sumfest, the production will be first world and we have … Read entire article »

In an open letter, Lady Saw bears it all, answering questions that well-wishers and critics have thrown at her since she gave her life to the Lord on Monday, December 14. “Some people are making negative arguments that I did it to steal the limelight of dancehall artist J Capri, whose funeral was held on Monday,” Saw’s letter stated. “It took me having to go to J Capri’s funeral to become a Christian. I started conversing with God in the church. The Holy Ghost ‘dash’ it all over me. God did a transformation in my closet,” said Saw who went on to … Read entire article »
