By Curtis Campbell— Ibo Cooper Chairman of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA), Ibo Cooper, recently told THE STAR that the music industry is lacking in new talent. According to the former Third World band member, the youth must be allowed to add their own flavor to the music industry without being judged by purists and blocked by self-proclaimed gatekeepers. He also stated that local radio should put more focus on local music. “Our radio stations here will play more hip hop than dancehall and reggae, and that’s their preference. WILL.I.AM SAMPLES DANCEHALL ON NEW SINGLE “BIRTHDAY!”

By Kevin Jackson—- WILL.I.AM… samples deejays Aidonia and Bounty Killer— Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am does a little dancehall on his latest song, Birthday, which samples deejays Aidonia and Bounty Killer. Birthday features Aidonia’s Fi Di Jockey and Bounty Killer chanting ‘Big Ship Sailing’. Birthday was co-produced by will.i.am and Damien LeRoy. It also has an appearance from American singer Cody Wise. Birthday is scheduled to be released on June 7 by Interscope Records. Stephen McGregor, who produced Fi Di Jockey for his Di Genius label, said his publishers at Sony Music are aware of the sample and approved its use. “Once the publishers give clearance, then we don’t necessarily know beforehand. STEPHEN McGREGOR MAKES ANOTHER INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION!

Maverick Sabre—  By Davina Henry– No stranger to collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry, producer Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor, has teamed up with yet another international star – Maverick Sabre. Sabre, an Irish-British singer, songwriter and rapper collaborated with the famed producer on the first single from his latest album titled Emotion. Both are signed to Sony/ATV. Described as a modern-day fusion of pounding beats and soulful vocals, the single also features a sample of Rufus and Chaka Khan’s classic hit, Ain’t Nobody. “They [Sony/ATV] flew me up to do some sessions and I did a two-day session with him.
