LOS ANGELES-BASED LEONIE McDONALD, PITCHES HER “STRICTLY VEGAN JAMAICAN CUISINE” IN JAMAICA!

BY HOWARD CAMPBELL—    Leonie McDonald, principal of Strictly Vegan Jamaican Cuisine, with reggae act Protoje— The spicy aroma of jerk fills the room at Island Grill restaurant in Manor Park. It’s easy on the nostrils, even for a committed vegan like Leonie McDonald. McDonald was in Jamaica recently, pitching her Strictly Vegan Jamaican Cuisine to owners of Island Village in Ocho Rios. “They (management) say there’s no vegan outlet in that complex so I’m looking at getting a licence from the (Jamaica) Tourist Board to set up a salad bar,” she told the Jamaica Observer. McDonald plans to set up her Rasta Taco Jamaican eatery there early next year. It would be the 65-year-old’s first restaurant since launching Strictly Vegan six years ago. VETERAN ROOTS GROUP, THE WAILING SOULS, HEAD TO KENYA NOVEMBER 5!

Legendary Jamaican roots-reggae group Wailing Souls are set for a live performance in Nairobi. According to the organisers, Chini Ya Mti Promotions, the three-time Grammy nominated group will perform on November 5 this year at the KICC Grounds. The Wailing Souls comprises Winston “Pipe” Matthews and Lloyd “Bread” McDonald. The group was formed in 1964 as The Renegades by Winston, Lloyd and George “Buddy” Haye. They recorded as backing singers with Ernest Ranglin and released their own debut single Lost Love . The group became The Wailing Souls in 1968 and in the same year, Haye left. They have so far released 18 studio albums, 10 compilation albums and one live album. VETERAN SINGER GARTH DENNIS RETURNS TO TRENCH TOWN!

 By Howard Campbell–  Garth Dennis— Garth Dennis belongs to a select group of reggae artists who have been members of two successful groups. In his case, Black Uhuru and the Wailing Souls. Dennis, 64, takes the spotlight on Trenchtown 19 3rd Street, his first solo album. The title is a nod to the area he grew up in Kingston which was a hub for artistic creativity in the 1960s. The diminutive Dennis lives in Los Angeles, but is in Jamaica for his father’s funeral. Since Trenchtown 19 3rd Street’s release in February, he has done a handful of shows to promote the set which belatedly introduces him as a lead singer. “It just goes to show that even though I was so low-profile, this is what I’m capable of,” Dennis told the Jamaica Observer.
