Having grown up in the family’s Randys record store in Kingston, it seemed he was already a music industry veteran. Chin is now president of VP, arguably the most successful independent label in contemporary music. The all-reggae company has distributed and marketed the music’s biggest names and helped expose dancehall to the American mainstream during the 1990’s. CLIVE CHIN TO RELEASE “THE LOST ARCHIVES OF STUDIO 17” TRIBUTE TO THE RANDY’S AND THE IMPACT LABELS!

 Clive Chin— AS a teenager, Clive Chin witnessed what became some of the most pivotal recording sessions in reggae at his father Vincent’s Studio 17 in downtown Kingston. By the early 1970s, Chin began producing songs for the family’s Randy’s label and his own Impact imprint. He plans to release songs from the latter this summer. The songs will be part of a compilation series called The Lost Archives Of Studio 17. It will contain tracks by Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and John Holt, as well as an instrumental album from Trinidadian guitarist Lynn Taitt. “What is important to me is that the Randy’s legacy lives on. PATRICIA CHIN OF VP RECORDS GETS A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!

 Pat Chin (second left) Patricia ‘Miss Pat’ Chin, widow of Vincent Chin and co-founder of VP Records, received the Lifetime Achievement Award Thursday night at the Libera Awards in New York. Chin is the first female recipient of the award, presented by the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM). She gave an emotional acceptance speech at the Highline Ballroom. “I am honored to be the first female to receive such a prestigious award. Words cannot truly convey my feelings. I’m so pleased to be recognized by the independent music community and A2IM, the reason being that, the spirit of independence has always been so deeply ingrained in my heart and thus, the heart of my business and life,” said Chin, who received a standing ovation.
